Simple Syrup is like the title suggests: simple. I never suggest buying it in the store, it’s a rip off. It is 1 part sugar to 1 part water. Heat it up to dissolve the sugar and voila! Simple, right?
Now to complicate things: Add water, orange juice, ginger, 1/2 cup sugar and cranberries to a sauce pan on medium to low heat. Simmer until cranberries start to pop. Let simmer a few more minutes. remove from heat and strain out the cranberries and ginger. Add back to the sauce pan and stir in remaining sugar. Let it simmer for about 7-8 minutes to allow some of the liquid to evaporate, leaving you with a nice syrup that can easily be added to any cocktail for a festive pop! I suggest adding a splash to a vodka soda!
Pro Tip: I was talking with a bartender this summer who says he always uses more sugar to liquid as to not water down the drinks! So if you want a stiffer cocktail that’s the way to go.
