One of the best (and most important) parts of hosting is deciding what food to serve. When I have guests for the weekend I try to make sure there are multiple options for breakfast. It’s a great meal for everyone to lounge and chat about the day to come or the antics of the night before. I ALWAYS make avocado toast because it’s such a crowd pleaser, but will have yogurt and granola on hand as well. If it’s a special occasion I’ll prep my kale, sausage, and mushroom breakfast casserole ahead of time, or make sheet pan breakfast hash.
When hosting for cocktails or wine, I make sure to have an extensive charcuterie platter—because everyone can find something they like on a charcuterie platter!!! And sometimes, when I’m feeling frisky, I’ll make an hors d’oeuvre to pass around. This Pear + Prosciutto appetizer is perfect for any get together and can be made in about 15 minutes. Plus it looks impressive!
To make, slice the pear into wedges, making sure to slice them thickly enough that they can hold the rest of the app. Then toss the wedges in lemon juice to keep from turning brown. I used gorgonzola crumbles because I had them leftover, but slices of manchego, brie, camembert, or aged cheddar would work as well.
I laid a few pieces of baby arugula atop of the pear wedges, then mashed the cheese crumbles together to make a bite sized ball and placed on top of the arugula; those of you who have ever had to feed pills to your dog will be familiar with this method (ha!). Now take thin strips of prosciutto and wrap around each pear bundle.
To make the balsamic glaze stir 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar and 1 tablespoon honey in a sauce pan over medium for 4-5 minutes until the vinegar has cooked down and the mixture has thickened. Remove from heat and let rest for a minute. Now spoon the glaze over the pear bundles, and viola! You just completely impressed your friends! Try these at your Easter get-together, or whenever you are hosting your next party!
